Common Injuries in Rear End Collision

Because of the force generated at the time of impact impact, rear end collision  has a tendency to result in several specific kinds of injuries:

• Whiplash is a soft-tissue neck injury that results when your head is forcefully jerked back and forth while your body is jolted forward from a sudden impact (as happens in rear end collision). Often, the result is that your neck sustains damage when its soft tendons, ligaments, and muscles are stretched beyond their normal range of motion.
• Back injuries associated with rear ended car accidents can include herniated discs, muscle ischemia, and muscle sprains and strains. Herniated discs can be especially serious and painful injuries, but any damage to the spinal cord can lead to significant – and sometimes permanent – injury.
• Facial injuries are common in low-speed rear ended auto collision because airbags are calibrated to go off at 20 mph. If you are rear ended going under 20, it’s likely that nothing will protect your face from slamming into the steering wheel. Broken facial bones and eye and/or tooth damage are common results.
• Hand, wrist, and arm injuries are common rear end collision injuries that occur when the airbag does deploy. In fact, the first body parts that your airbag is likely to hit are your hands, wrists, and arms. The impact of the car accident can also cause your hands, wrists, and arms to become wedged into the front of your car;  the injuries incurred can be very long lasting and can have a serious impact on your ability to function day to day.
